Secret Gardens & Green Spaces
The hidden green world most Orlando visitors never find
About This Tour
Orlando hides its best nature in plain sight. Between the tourist corridors and theme park billboards, the city has quietly accumulated one of the most remarkable collections of gardens, wild lakeshores, and green sanctuaries in Florida — most of them free, all of them uncrowded. This walk connects the tucked-away botanical treasures that locals fiercely protect from the travel guides: a cypress forest at the edge of a lake, a garden planted by a family that's tended it for three generations, a wildflower corridor reclaimed from a forgotten rail yard. You won't find these on the theme park maps. That's exactly the point.

Mead Botanical Garden
A 47-acre free public garden in Winter Park that almost no tourists know exists — one of the most serene green spaces in Central Florida.
"The city of Winter Park bought this land in 1940 after a local naturalist named Theodore Mead spent decades documenting the native plants that grew here. Today it's a 47-acre wilderness garden of native Florida species — magnolias, palmettos, ferns taller than your shoulders — all of it free, all of it almost always empty. The tourists are four miles south, standing in line."
Kraft Azalea Garden
Ancient bald cypress trees rise from the edge of Lake Maitland — their roots reaching into the water like something from a myth, draped in Spanish moss.
"These cypress trees were standing before Orlando existed. Some of them have been here since before European contact — centuries old, their buttressed roots spreading into the lake like the fingers of a buried giant. On a winter morning with mist rising off the water, this is one of the strangest and most beautiful places in Florida. It looks nothing like what people expect Orlando to look like. That's what makes it perfect."
